Abstract

The aims of this  study is to discover out the metal elements content, exclusively heavy metals in specific vegetables in the Babylon markets . The collected samples  were from regions which is the most susceptible to contamination being located in places exposed to car exhaust and densely populated . the studied types of vegetables are cucumber , turnips , lettuce , tomatoes and radishes , while the studied heavy metals are Iron (Fe) , cobalt (Co) , Selenium (Se) and Potassium (K) .

the concentration of these elements were measured without washing the collected samples using atomic absorption technology . the current study results  revealed that the highest concentration of (Fe) and (Co) were in lettuce , and the highest concentration of (Se) and(K) were in radishes . where the measured concentration of (Fe , Co , Se , and K) were ( 3.0 , 0.4 , 0.3 and 145.6 mg .kg-1 ) , (3.0 , 0.3 , 0.7 and 191.0 mg.kg-1 ) , ( 8.6 , 3.2 , 0.6 and 194.0 mgkg-1 ) , (2.7 , 1.2 , VDL , 235.6 mgkg-1 ) and ( 4.2 , 0.3 , 2.3 , and 245.6 mgkg-1 ) in cucumber , turnips , lettuce , tomatoes and radishes , respectively .
