THE GRAIN QUALITY OF MODERN DURUM WHEAT CULTIVARS AND LANDRACES

The objective of this study was to determine the grain quality of landraces in comparison with modern cultivars grown in Turkey. Fifty-six modern durum wheat cultivars and 55 durum landraces were obtained from the different parts of Turkey. The population of modern durum wheat cultivars were grown in 1996-97 and 1997-98 growing seasons while landraces were grown only in 1997-1998 growing season at Bornova. Protein content and vitreousness were determined in each growing season. The mean, standard deviation, standard deviation of mean, range, coefficient of variation, correlation and histogram based on protein content and vitreousness for modern durum wheats and landraces in each growing season were estimated. The results indicated that the population including landraces had higher protein content than the population consisting of modern durum wheat cultivars which had higher mean of vitreousness. There was not statistically significant correlation between the two quality traits showing that selection should be done separately for each trait.
