Abstract

Certain maize hybrids recommended for the Macander Valley as main crop by the seed companies were tested at the Experimental Farm of the Agricultural Faculty of Adnan Menderes University to determine their yield capacities and some agronomic characters in 1995 and 1996. Variance analyses were applied to the data obtained from the plots arranged in Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications for the following traits: the yield, number of ears per ha, days to silking, grain moisture at harvest, plant height, ear height, thousand kernel weight, ear length, number of rows on ear, kernel/ear percentage, ear diameter and ear stem diameter. The results showed that there were significant differences (p< 0.05) for all the traits among the hybrids. Seven hybrids i.e. DK.743, Flash, Doge, LG. 2777, Dragma, P.3163 and C.955 gave the yields over 15 tons/ha, while the lowest yielding hybrid, C.7993 had a yield about 13 tons/ha.
